After much debating about the future of the Palace Theatre and the Royal Opera And Ballet making it their northern home and depriving the city of a major lyric theatre, there is, at least, some good theatrical news for the city.

After nearly 50 years at Manchester Central LIbrary The Library Theatre Company have announced that they have chosen the old Theatre Royal on Peter Street as their new home.

The Theatre Royal was Manchester's first and only cinema/theatre.

It is Grade II listed.
A great deal of work will need to be done to bring the building up to modern standards. The move should be complete in around 5 years time.
It hasn't seen a live performance in over 70 years.
Its recent life has been as a bingo hall and most recently a nightclub called The Royale.
