Imelda Staunton and Mathew Horne are cast in a major revival of Joe Orton's comic masterpiece, Entertaining Mr Sloane.  Directed by Nick Bagnall, this dark study of sexual manners will run at the Trafalgar Studios 1 from 22 January to 11 April 2009 with press night on Friday 30 January, in a co-production with Michael Edwards & Carole Winter and English Touring Theatre.

Sloane, a handsome and amoral young man charms his way into the household of the middle-aged and emotionally desperate, Kath and her prurient brother Ed.  The sibling pair compete for the affections of their new lodger in a game of sexual tug-of-war, which leads to dark secrets, blackmail and murder.

Olivier award-winning actress Imelda Staunton plays Kath.  Her many stage credits include There Came a Gypsy Riding (Almeida), Calico (Duke of Yorks), Life x 3,The Beggar's Opera, A Chorus of Disapproval and Guys and Dolls at The National Theatre.  Her extensive television and film work includes Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Vera Drake, for which she received many awards and nominations world-wide including an Academy Award nomination, Nanny McPhee, Bright Young Things, Shakespeare in Love andCranford. Mathew Horne plays the eponymous Sloane.  

Mathew's television credits include the award-winning BBC TV comedy series Gavin and Stacey, The Catherine Tate Show and Roman's Empire.  His film credits includeLesbian Vampire Killers which will be released in March 2009.  Mathew's new sketch show Horne and Corden is co-written with co- star James Corden and directed by Kathy Burke.  It will be broadcast on BBC in 2009.

Entertaining Mr Sloane was Joe Orton's controversial breakthrough play. First performed in 1964, the play is recognised as the most autobiographical of his works. In a short but prolific career, Orton's work as a playwright includes The Ruffian on the Stair, Loot, The Erpingham Camp and What the Butler Saw.

Entertaining Mr Sloane is designed by Peter McKintosh and Colin Richmond.  The creative associate is Kathy Burke.

Michael Edwards and Carole Winter are currently producing Six Characters in Search of an Author, Horrid Henry - Live and Horrid! and Carousel.  Their previous producing credits include the Olivier award-winning play Blackbird, On the Waterfrontand In Celebration.  English Touring Theatre is one of Britain's leading touring companies.  As well as the classics, ETT has been successful with several world premieres, including HushabyeMountain by Jonathan Harvey, The York Realist by Peter Gill andHoneymoon Suite by Richard Bean.  Under Rachel Tackley it has become the first producer-led company with its most recent credits including Athol Fugard's Hello and Goodbye with Rafe Spall and Saskia Reeves.
