EDINBURGH 2022: Crybabies Q&A

BWW catches up with Crybabies to chat about bringing Bagbeard to the 2022 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Crybabies: Bagbeard
Bagbeard is our latest narrative sketch comedy adventure. It's our attempt to skewer classic sci-fi tropes in a surreal way. Think E.T. but the alien is played by a man who's about to turn 30 and once tried to hoover up water. It's got monsters, songs, props, costumes and a love story to the last the ages.

Who are Crybabies?
Without doubt, ONE of the UK's narrative-driven sketch comedy trios. We are Ed (short hair, insecure), Michael (thin hair, sad) and James (long hair, Irish). That's it. That's kind of the brand. We will say that if you're fans of The Mighty Boosh or The League of Gentlemen, both of their back catalogues are readily available online.

Where might we have seen you before?
Well do the words National Student Drama Festival 2014 Participants mean anything to you? You may have caught our first show Danger Brigade back in 2019. Or seen Michael in Breeders or James pop up on Afterlife. There's a good chance you've watched Ed pander to teenagers on TikTok and sighed deeply.

Do you think you know what to expect from the Fringe?
This year feels like a real unknown quantity. It's hard to know whether people will be chomping at the bit to see some red-hot narrative sketch comedy or if the crazy money needed to even nip up for the weekend will put people off. But apart from expensive pints and horrible communal bathrooms, we're expecting to see one of the best Fringe line ups in years.

Who would you recommend comes to see Bagbeard?
Hopefully there's a little something for everyone. Sci-fi-heads may notice an easter egg or two and fans of surreal comedy should be right at home. But if our Facebook ad algorithm is anything to go by, we should target people in their thirties into 'dining out' and 'music'.
