Moth StorySLAM Champion Miyo Yamauchi brings her solo dark comedy How To Die In Japan to the District Fringe Festival this July, marking her East Coast debut.Born and raised in Japan, Yamauchi guides audiences through the rigid etiquette of Japanese funerals TPO, or Time, Place, and Occasion as she navigates loss from the collision point of two cultures with very different rules for grief. The result is a show that's funnier than it sounds and more moving than you'd expect: a deeply personal story about family, identity, and the strange, unexpected laughter that surfaces in the middle of mourning. The production features an original score by composer Michael D. Mortilla (Sony/Columbia Pictures, the Olympics), visual design and animation by Gold Telly Award winner Anthony Phills, and lighting design by Willow McFatter. The show is directed by Jane Morris, whose credits include Second City, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a role opposite Meryl Streep in The Laundromat. How To Die In Japan is Yamauchi's second solo show, following her sold-out hit How To Be Japanese. The Los Angeles premiere of How To Die In Japan sold out in 36 hours.Larry Hankin (Breaking Bad, Escape from Alcatraz, Friends) calls the show "funny and intelligent," while award-winning author Cara Lopez Lee says, "Never has death been so decorous and yet so hilarious."How To Die In Japan plays six performances at the University of the District of Columbia (Building 46E, 4200 Connecticut Ave NW, Washington, DC 20008): 6:00pm Sunday, July 12; 7:45pm Saturday, July 18; 6:15pm Sunday, July 19; 5:45pm and 8:15pm Friday, July 24; and 5:45pm Saturday, July 25.
