Theater Alliance Will Present WOODY GUTHRIE'S AMERICAN SONG Outdoors This Summer
The production will run at The Wharf Waterfront Park in Washington, D.C.
Theater Alliance has announced a summer 2026 production of Woody Guthrie'S AMERICAN SONG, conceived and adapted by Peter Glazer, with orchestrations and vocal arrangements by Jeff Waxman and direction by Tim Seib. The outdoor production will run August 6–29, 2026 at The Wharf Waterfront Park.
Built from the songs and writings of Woody Guthrie, the musical combines Guthrie’s music with scenes inspired by his life and work. The production examines themes of labor, activism, and community through the perspective of working-class Americans affected by economic and political instability.
According to Theater Alliance, the production reflects the company’s “Radical Neighboring” initiative by presenting the work entirely in public outdoor space in partnership with The Wharf and the local Advisory Neighborhood Commission. All performances will use the company’s Name Your Own Price ticketing model.
Executive Artistic Director Shanara Gabrielle said in a statement, “Woody Guthrie spent his life insisting that America’s story belonged to everyone, to the workers, the migrants, the people who built this country and were too often written out of its history - and that fight is not over.”
Performances will take place Thursdays through Sundays at 7:15 p.m. at The Wharf Waterfront Park, located at 515 Water St SW in Washington, D.C. The production will also transfer to Reston Town Square Park in Northern Virginia for one weekend.
