First Draft at Charter Theater – a nonprofit organization devoted to developing theater audiences alongside new plays; supporting local artists; and partnering with theaters looking to produce new work – announced today that it will present two readings this month of the new comedy, "Waiting," by DC-based playwright and Charter Theater co-founder, Richard C. Washer.

"Waiting" explores the comic travails of Millie, an aging baby-boomer who refuses to cater to societal expectations, and decides to redefine her identity; while her daughter and an unsuspecting waiter attempt to influence her navigation of unchartered territory.

The February readings will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14th at the Arts Club of Washington; and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28th at Theater on the Run in Arlington.  The popular First Draft series combines the reading of a play with a guided, post-show audience discussion.

Richard is a playwright, composer and director who served as First Draft's inaugural Playwright-in-Residence for the 2010-2011 season.  His full-length plays include "Missa" at New Works Theatre, "Of a Sunday Morning" (Charter Theater), "Monkeyboy" (co-written with Keith Bridges and Chris Stezin; Charter Theater), "The Chicken of the Family" (a children's musical co-written with award-winning author Mary Amato; Charter Theater), "The Fetish" (The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts), "Getting It" (The National Conservatory of Dramatic Arts) and "Quartet" (Hamner Theatre.)  Other plays produced at various theaters and festivals include "Shalimar," "Loops," "Elegy" and "Fulcrum."  Washer  has taught creative writing workshops at numerous institutions, including the Writer's Center, the Kennedy Center, the American College Theater Festival, First Draft, Charter Theater and Clemson University.  Washer holds a BA in Music and Anthropology from the University of Virginia, and an MFA in Creative Writing from American University.

First Draft at Charter Theater is supported in part by Arlington County through the Cultural Affairs Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources and the Arlington Commission for the Arts.  The First Draft Reading Series is also made possible in part by the warmth and generosity of the Drama Committee of the Arts Club of Washington, and The Share Fund of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region.
