DC Arts Center Announces Their Upcoming Events and Shows

By: Jul. 19, 2010

The District of Columbia Arts Center, founded in 1989, is a nonprofit arts space dedicated to promoting the freshest, most under-recognized artists in the Washington metropolitan area. Located in the heart of Adams Morgan, DCAC is comprised of a 750 square foot gallery and a 50 seat black box theater. Over the years, DCAC has received local, national and international
reviews of its over 100 visual arts exhibitions and 500 performance events. We encourage an ongoing dialogue between new artists and the greater arts community, assisting artists in both the business and craft of art. As DCAC continues to draw poets, painters, actors, storytellers, sculptors, and performance artists from around the corner to around the world; the Center remains a mainstay of the Washington, DC arts community.

1460 Wallmountables 2010- DCAC's Annual Open Exhibition, runs July 23 - August 29. Installation: July 21, 3-8pm; July 22, 3-8pm; July 23, 3-6pm. Opening Reception: July 23, 7-9pm

Grab your hammer and nails and get ready for this year's 1460 Wallmountables! A tradition since 1990, Wallmountables is DCAC's annual open exhibition. Inspired by the essays Gore Vidal wrote for Vanity Fair about his correspondence with Timothy McVeigh, this drama imagines a series of death row encounters between characters firmly based on the acclaimed novelist and the man convicted and executed for bombing the Oklahoma City Federal Building. The clock ticks as a strangely flirtatious connection between these diverse men evolves when they discover a common belief that the federal government is trampling freedoms enshrined in the Constitution. SeeNoSun OnStage presents the Washington, DC premier of Terre Haute for the 2010 Capital Fringe Festival.

DCAC and GALA Theatre present Los Treinta a celebration of the thirty-year history of the Salvadorean presence in Washington DC. Los Treinta is a research, oral history, and performance project that brought together artists, scholars, and students to explore the presence of Salvadoreans in the Washington DC area over the last thirty years. Working together, this team has deeply explored the evolution of our migration and presence. The basis of the process was research-looking at data and statistics, reviewing articles from local papers over the years, and most importantly, interviews and conversations with the people who lived through these thirty years. The real voice of the performance comes directly from their stories, anecdotes and concerns. Los Treinta will be further developed and have a longer run at DCAC in the fall of 2010.

Eight is a Washington Post "Editors' Pick" at the 2010 Capital Fringe Festival and will have a second run at DCAC.

Eight, by young English playwright Ella Hickson, is a series of eight thematically connected monologues about young people struggling to find identity in a culture wracked by war, plagued by terrorism and on the brink of economic collapse. Far from dark and depressing, each of Eight's diverse stories are united in their humanity, humor and sensuality.
Eight is a theater experience that combines brilliant, exciting writing, tour-de-force performance and an experimental form that challenges and engages both audience and cast. Before each performance, the audience is given the opportunity to vote on which of the eight monologues they would like to see, based on a menu that includes photos, character names, and a telling line of dialogue from the script. Of the eight monologues, only the top four audience picks of the night are presented. This allows the audience, cast and characters to share the same experience of having great expectations and desires that may or may not be met. All involved may come to find that not getting what they want is the most rewarding experience they could ask for.
