It is not often such two well-received plays open in Baltimore on successive days. But it's been that kind of a week.

Musician Mark Bennett is probably the only individual who has his work in each. Bennnett did the Original Sound Design and Additional Music for "Golda's Balcony" which opened Tuesday night, May 9 at the Hippodrome and has contributed music for the Center Stage production for "Crumbs from the Table of Joy" which opened Wednesday night, May 10.

Valerie Harper has just arrived in Baltimore but she seems to be everywhere. I heard Marc Steiner's wonderful radio interview on Wednesday afternoon with Harper on WYPR-FM (88.1) and you can catch her interview with Rhea Feikin on MPT's Artworks This Week in a repeat on Saturday morning, May 13 @ 9 a.m. Here you can get a glimpse of what her terrific performance is like.

You only have one more week to see this incredible show. "Golda" ends Sunday, May 21. Call 410-547-7328.

Also on the Steiner show this week was Baltimorean Charles "Roc" Dutton. The Emmy winning actor and Broadway veteran was promoting his own one-person show "From Jail to Yale" which will be performed at Center Stage on May 24 and 25 to benefit the Episcopal Church Social Services program that aids prisoners upon their release from incarceration. Dutton knows from his own experience how tough this can be. He related reading the play "Day of Absence" which I recall Center Stage doing under the direction of Tim Vasen. He commented that reading this play turned his life around. Over 9,000 convicts get released every year and Dutton is attempting to help. For tickets, call 410-332-0033.

I'm looking forward to seeing "Crumbs from the Table of Joy" tonight and following the play is "Meet the Actors" which is always entertaining and informative. Lynn Nottage's play will run through June 11. You can catch an interview with Director David Schweizer on MPT's Artworks This Week on Wed. May17 @ Call 410-332-0033.

What is "Kickin' It with the "Rents? You can see "Crumbs from the Table of Joy", have a discussion with Center Stage staff 90 minutes before the show and have dinner for $8. Yes, $8. The two dates are Sunday night, May 21 @ and Thursday, May 25 @   This is brought to you by M&T Bank, the Creative Baltimore Fund, and the Jim and Patty Rouse Charitable Foundation.

Everyman is finalizing the much-anticipated "Candida" by George Bernard Shaw which opens next week.

BARGAIN of the week. Tuesday, May 16, the first preview performance is Pay-What-You-Can. There are also discounted performances on May 17 and 18. The official opening is Friday, May 19.  Call 410-752-2208 or visit www.everymantheatre.org.

White. A blank page or canvass. So many possibilities. Well, that famous line from "Sunday in the Park with George" is something like that. Fells Point Corner Theatre presents Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical about the impressionist painter, Georges Seurat. Opening night is May 12. Call 410-276-7837.

The other musical in town is "Mamaleh" which has been selling out at the Spotlighters.

May 21 it ends. Call 410-752-1225.

Wait…another Tony nominated musical can be found at Pumpkin Theatre. Starting Saturday, May 13 for two week-ends is "A Year with Frog and Toad", a Baltimore premiere. This entertaining musical is based on the Alan Lobel story. Call 410-828-1814 or see www.pumpkintheatre.com. This is a great way to introduce young people to theater and they host birthday parties as well.

Always great to hear about the success of local students. So I'm happy to send congratulations to BaltimoreSchool for the Arts senior Shalita Grant for being named one of 20 Presidential Scholars in the Arts for 2006, the only Presidential Scholar from Maryland.  Shalita, along with the other recipients in Dance, Music, and Theater will be featured during the Salute at the KennedyCenter's Concert Hall on Monday, June 26 at

Put on your calendar 10 FREE performances of "Pericles" by the Shakespeare Theatre Company May 25-June 4 at Carter Barron Amphitheatre in DC. Call 202-334-4790 or www.ShakespeareTheatre.org. This Shakespeare play is directed by David Muse with original direction by the incomparable Mary Zimmerman.

The Round House Silver Spring has the latest work of Lee Blessing, "A Body of Water" beginning May 12-June 4. Call 240-644-1100. Tonight and tomorrow's matinee are both "Pay What You Can". So, make a day of it…and before or after the show, head to Bethesda Arts Festival Saturday and Sunday.

The Arena continues with its double-bill of "on the verge or the geography of learning" and "lady day at emerson's bar and grill". Call 202-488-3300.

The OlneyTheatreCenter has a wonderful week-end open house, May 13 and 14.

Take the kids to see "The Imagination Movers" (for 2-6 year olds) and on Sunday, Kitty Carlisle Hart will be performing. Call 301-924-3400.

Toby's Dinner Theatre Columbia still has Tony winner "Thoroughly Modern Millie" to June 18 (410-730-8311) while the Baltimore location has "Beauty and the Beast" to May 28 (call 410-649-1660).

Auditions: Toby's Dinner Theatre of Columbia has announced Open General Auditions for "Kiss Me Kate" and Holiday Show and for Baltimore "Ragtime" and "It's a Wonderful Life". The Columbia auditions are May 13 from and for Baltimore, May 20 from Call Vicki @410-730-8311, ext. 3004.

Set your VCR or DVR for Sunday morning, May 14. On A&E's "Breakfast with the Arts", the author of the critically acclaimed "The History Boys" will appear. This is one of the hottest plays on Broadway. It has won three major awards in England and look for a number of Tony nominations (which by the way are announced on Tuesday morning, May 16 @ , hopefully live on some television program). For tickets call 212-239-6200. Just Added: Catch a sneak peek at "Tarzan", the new Disney musical, on Monday, May 15 on "Good Morning America" between 8-9 a.m. The Phil Collins song " For the First Time" will be performed.

For Mother's Day, why not skip the chocolate and flowers and instead do something that will last forever, take Mother to the theater.  She will love it and you can still give her the chocolates and the flowers!
