(Randolph, VT) – Vermont Pride Theater will mount the New England premiere of AUNT JACK by S.P. Monahan, under the direction of Gene Heinrich at the Chandler Center for the Arts.

AUNT JACK touches on many hot-button topics in the LGBTQ community, but its underlying focus is how we view family. The play centers around the sudden death of George Church, a prominent gay activist, and his gay son’s introduction of his new love interest to the family. These two incidents clash in such hilarious, heartwarming ways that audience members are left asking themselves one hard question: is family always just blood or is it what we create for ourselves? Director Gene Heinrich says: “When I read the laugh-out-loud script I knew I had to direct this play. It has everything: gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and drag performers! S.P. Monahan created a piece of theater using outrageous characters to tell a story that many have dealt with, but no one really speaks about… I know I am being ambiguous about this, but there are some pretty surprising things that happen during the show.”

Vermont Pride Theater’s production of AUNT JACK will star Bob Carmody, Tristan Goding, Joshua Huffman, Susan Loynd, and Nimue Washburn, with Jeff Tolbert in the title role. AUNT JACK previously had a workshop and staged reading in September 2017 at The Bridge Theatre in New York, produced by Wide Eyed Productions. It will have another production this summer at Empire Stage in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Performances of AUNT JACK are Friday, July 20th, and Saturday, July 28th, both at 7:30pm. The eighth annual summer pride theater festival is sponsored by the Gay & Lesbian Fund of Vermont, the Samara Fund of the Vermont Community Foundation, and the Vermont Conference United Church of Christ. Media support is provided by Vermont Public Radio, the Point, and 105.7 The Beat. Other plays in the festival are A PERFECT FIT by Lia Romeo and BRIGHT HALF LIFE by Tanya Barfield.
