The fables, foibles and falls of the British Monarchy are delightfully exposed in WordStage's performances of John Barton's "The Hollow Crown", running at 8:00pm Friday and Saturday, April 5 & 6, 2013.
The Hollow Crown was devised by John Barton in 1961 for the Royal Shakespeare Company as a celebratory entertainment by and about the kings and queens of England, and its informative, yet lively and entertaining glimpses of British history have since delighted audiences from London to Broadway.Spanning the centuries beginning with the death of William in 1066 to Queen Victoria's description of her coronation, a quartet of performers present poetry, speeches, letters and diaries from monarchs over a period of 800 years. Also included are chronicles of their contemporaries and self-styled historians, (including a very witty teen-aged Jane Austen) describing their subjects' lives and reigns with mordant humor, sympathy and stinging satire. The readings are delectably supported by music of the relevant period, including songs and solo piano performed by CIM Faculty Members, baritone Mark Wanich and pianist Adam Whiting. WordStage artistic director Tim Tavcar, and special guest artist, Agnes Herrmann will perform the provocative prose.
The performances will take place at 8:00pm on Friday, April 5, 2013 at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church - 20401 Hilliard Blvd. in Rocky River, and at 8:00pm on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the First Unitarian Church, 21600 Shaker Blvd. in Shaker Heights.
Tickets are available at the door 1 hour before each performance or you may call for advance reservations.
