Violinist Helena Baillie to Play Middlebury's Town Hall Theater, 6/15

By:

With her "brilliance and poignance" (The Strad), Helena Baillie has emerged as an international virtuoso on not one but two instruments - violin and viola.

The London-born musician will play both at a concert at Middlebury's Town Hall Theater on Saturday, June 15, at 8 pm.

A prizewinner in international competitions, Baillee has performed throughout Europe and the United States, including collaborations with Pinchas Zucherman, the Tokyo Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. From 2010-2013, Helena was in residence at Bard College with an Artist Fellowship.

"This is string playing of a very, very high caliber," says THT executive director Douglas Anderson. "Helena is a dazzling technician and she's absolutely mesmerizing to watch."

On piano will be Tanya Gabrielian, who has an exciting international career of her own. The London Times called her "a pianist of powerful physical and imaginative muscle." She has performed in venues all over the world, including Carnegie Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Wigmore Hall in London, and the Sydney Opera House.

Their ambitious program includes Lukas Foss' Capriccio, transcribed for viola from the original for cello, by Helena Baillie; Robert Schumann's Sonata in A minor for Violin and Piano; Suite Italienne from Pulcinella by Igor Stravinsky, transcribed by Dushkin/Silverthorne; Antonin Dvorak's Romance Op.11 for Violin and Piano; and Sicilienne, from the Flute Sonata No. 2, 1031, by J. S. Bach.

The concert is on Saturday, June 15 at 8 pm. Tickets are $17 and may be purchased at 802 382-9222, www.townhalltheater.org, at the THT Box Office (Mon-sat, Noon-5 pm) or at the door.
