Sandglass' Voices of Community Series Presents Sean Christopher Lewis
Sean Christopher Lewis- Just Kids plays November 11-12 at 8pm at Sandglass Theater.
$15/$12 Students and Seniors
In this autobiographical piece, Sean Lewis is pulled into a sudden rush of discoveries about his own unsettling past while spending lonely weeks in Kansas teaching a group of emotionally troubled kids. Sean's long-estranged biological father forces him to endure the strife of their troubled relationship one more time, before leaving Sean to pick up the pieces and figure out what it all means. This powerful show contains some explicit language, which may not be suitable for younger audiences.
Sean Christopher Lewis' plays have won the Kennedy Center's Rosa Parks Award, and the National New Play Network's Smith PrizE. Lewis is also a noted actor, working Off Broadway at the Pearl Theatre, in NYC at LaMama, ETC, in television and feature films from Comedy Central's Upright Citizen's Brigade to God's Country. Sean is also a contributor to NPR's This American Life.
Workshops: While in residence at Sandglass, Sean has taught a variety of workshops in our local schools. His workshops have ranged from Graduate level exploration of interviewing techniques at SIT, to a Slam Poetry based workshop exploring themes of substance abuse and sexuality at the Compass School. He also spoke on the role of the arts in community on Thursday evening at an event organized by Transition Putney.
Sean Lewis has taught everywhere from schools for the exceptionally gifted in Eastern Iowa to prisons in North Philadelphia to villages in East Africa. His workshops use popular forms (hip hop, movies, basic storytelling) to empower writers to find their own voice. Whether breaking down a popular song by Wiz Kalifa to see the story structure inherent in the rap lyrics or creating abridged versions of popular movies to get right to the drama, the workshops make writing less mystical and more fun.
Voices of Community: A Performance series on Diversity, now in its 7th year, is presented by Sandglass Theater. Through performances and workshops, the series serves to create a sustained dialog between nationally acclaimed artists and our local community members about issues of diversity and identity. The series is made possible by funding from The National Endowment for the Arts and the National Performance Network.
The theater has limited wheel-chair seating, please call in advance to reserve those seats. For more info on the dialogue or the performances, and to make reservations please contact Sandglass Theater at (802) 387-4051 or info@sandglasstheater.org.
