"Songs of Experience" Patty Smith Solo Dance at Town Hall Theater Friday, August 28 at 8 pm

In her 2-part production: "Songs of Experience," Patty Smith, first, brings to life, in delightful miniature, the gargantuan personas of 3 "Tiny Divas," Edith Piaf, Lotte Lenya, and Judy Garland (all under 5 ft). "They give me license," admits dancer Patty Smith (4'10"). "They did in song what I long to do in dance...expressing the cathartic desires of the heart. They went all the way...some never came back."

The 2nd part of the program, "War Dances Redux," is a commentary on the banality of war. The extended work: "Love Songs from War Dances," was produced in 1999 and 2000 under the auspices of a Vermont Community Foundation Grant. Today, with the world plunged into apparent "war without end," this work seems prescient in every way. Through song and movement it is an examination of the common and pervasive emotions that lead up to the "parade to war" as well as the despair and destruction that is its aftermath.

If you have never seen Patty Smith dance, this is an excellent opportunity to see her in a rare solo setting. She has been hailed as a "Vermont Treasure" by dance critics Sharry Underwood and Tarin Chaplin, and concert pianist Diana Fanning alike.

The concert is suited for mature audiences, however Patty would like to extend a personal invitation to all her students and their parents.

Tickets for "Songs of Experience" are $10 and are available through the Town Hall Theater Box Office by calling (802)382-9222, online at www.townhalltheater.org, or at the door.
