He performs in film and television shows with people like Robin Williams, Martin Landau, Don Johnson, Christopher Walken and Bruce Willis.

But he’s a local boy, a graduate of Middlebury Union High School, Class of ’83, and Mike Sommers is coming home to try out his new one-man play, A Vermont Boy in West Oakland, at Middlebury’s Town Hall Theater.

The play tells a true story. Sommers, fresh from a divorce, buys a foreclosed home in West Oakland, California, a notoriously tough inner city neighborhood. He begins as a complete outsider but moves from misunderstanding and fear to acceptance, understanding and laughter.

Sommers plays all twenty roles. People who have seen the work call it heartfelt, hilarious, musical and courageous.

Says Sommers, “I’m a character actor, whether in film, TV or theater, I’ve always excelled playing widely divergent characters – the wackier, the more intense the better. Well, let me just say the A Vermont Boy in West Oakland definitely shows off this skill! It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on stage!”

A Vermont Boy in West Oakland will play for one performance only tonight, September 7 at 7:00 pm. This is the first performance of the 2012-13 Season of the THT Cabaret Series which takes place in the Byers Studio on the theater’s lower level. Tickets are $10, and may be purchased at www.townhalltheater.org, 802 382-9222, at the THT Box Office (Noon- 5 pm, Mon-Sat) or at the door.
