Local Architects Reexamine the Living Space In Vermont

Houses are asked provide a lot of things: shelter, comfort, space for our everyday lives. We want them to be pleasing to the eye, easy to maintain, and these days, energy-efficiency is a must.

The latest exhibit in Town Hall Theater's Jackson Gallery presents seven local architects and design firms as they grapple with the challenge of building new homes in Vermont.

"We have quite a few superb architects here in the area," says THT executive director Douglas Anderson. "We thought it would be great to showcase their work, and to see the astonishing houses they design and build today."

The exhibit, titled Home in Vermont, will present seven separate building projects, following them from "the sketch on the back of the napkin," says Anderson, "through the design process, then construction, and on to photos of the finished building."

The exhibit opens with a reception on Friday, January 7 from 5:00-6:30 pm. It features recent projects by master architects John McLeod, Andrea Murray, James Sanford, and Jean Terwilliger. Also in the exhibit are a mill-built home by Connor Homes, a sophisticated new yurt in New Haven, and Middlebury College's winning entry in the Solar Decathlon, an off-the-grid home designed by students that will soon be erected on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Home in Vermont continues through late February. The Jackson Gallery, on the lower level of Town Hall Theater, is open Monday - Saturday, noon - 5:00 pm, and during theater events. For information, contact the Gallery at 802-382-9222.
