THAT WAS THEN is a new Canadian musical featuring four women representing three generations, telling the stories of life-long friends, Emily and Sarah, as they navigate their changing lives...an emotional, open look at the relationships between mothers, and daughters, and the people who love them.

Sarah is feverishly trying to meet the deadline for her master’s thesis when her marriage hits the rocks. Emotions are running high, adding considerable strain to the already volatile relationship between her and her daughter, Anne, who has just completed university and is working out what she wants her life as a young adult to look like. On the same weekend, Emily’s estranged mother unexpectedly makes contact, forcing her to consider reconciliation and forgiveness. And what’s so urgent that Mary begins repeatedly calling? Of course, Emily and Sarah have each other to lean on, but is their friendship strong enough to withstand all of these pressures?

This is the second musical by Vancouver-based, Kate MacColl, known for her award-winning songs about the human condition, set to music in the style of artists such as Carole King and Adele. Her skill as a vocal arranger is evident in the gorgeous harmonies and interweaving parts of several duets and trios in the score, and her training as a Classical pianist has resulted in rhythmically complex and inventive piano accompaniments. The storylines are universal, with something relatable for everyone, and although this is a sequel to Kate’s first musical, “This Is Now” (2018), “That Was Then” stands alone.

Cast members are: Sabrielle McCurdy, an incredibly busy singer and actor most recently seen in performance with the 30th anniversary tour of “Winter Harp”, Rose McNeil, musical theatre instructor at Arts Umbrella and award-winning cabaret performer, Katrina Teitz, a film, television and stage actor seen all of December 2023 in Carousel Theatre’s production of “Snow White”, and Lorna McLellan, a very active member of the Nanaimo theatre community as an actor and in various behind-the-scenes roles. The production team includes: Shel Wyminga (director), Anna Brew (stage manager), Elsa Orme (assistant stage manager), and Brianna Bernard (lighting designer).

“That Was Then” runs at The NEST, 1398 Cartwright Street (on Granville Island in Vancouver), January 19 – 21, 2024; evening performances on Friday and Saturday are 7:30 – 9:30 and matinee performances on Saturday and Sunday are 3:00 – 5:00.
