THE AMISH PROJECT Comes to Vancouver In February Image

The Amish Project is a fictional exploration of the tragic events of the Nickel Mines shooting, when the local milkman walked into an Amish schoolhouse and shot all the girls and then himself. The Amish responded to this crime by forgiving the gunman and embracing his family as fellow victims.

Inspired by true events in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania in 2006, this powerful play explores the challenging path of forgiveness. At the centre of the story is Carol, the gunman's widow, who must not only wrestle with questions about the man she loves but with the outpouring of generosity from those most affected by the tragedy.

"No matter how much time I spend with this script, no matter how deeply we dive into this story, no matter how much I know about the events that inspired it, I cannot wrap my mind around the enormity of the forgiveness that the Amish community extended in the face of this tragedy. The opportunity to live inside that reality is life-giving," says Jessie award winning director Angela Konrad.

Originally produced at Rosebud Theatre, this production is "thrillingly theatrical and heart-expandingly human." Dark Glass Theatre is pleased to be able to bring the show to Vancouver audiences following its sold-out Alberta run.

Dark Glass Theatre is proud to present another powerful story, following their critically acclaimed, Jessie award-winning production of Lynn Nottage's Pulitzer Prize-winner Ruined (at Pacific Theatre, 2018).

Dark Glass Theatre is a Vancouver based company that exists to tell stories that enable us to see, face to face, people we might not otherwise meet, thereby decreasing judgement, increasing compassion, and fostering empathy. Dark Glass Theatre aspires to tell stories that build bridges between groups or individuals separated by discord or trauma, and to equip individuals to explore and express their own stories of forgiveness and healing.
