Pacific Theatre presents N. Richard Nash's charming prairie romance The Rainmaker. A tale of hope in barren times. Pacific Theatre is starting off its 2014-2015 season with a touch of simplicity in N. Richard Nash's charming prairie romance The Rainmaker. Lizzie Curry's hopes and dreams are as barren as the land in her drought-ridden family ranch; she wants to find love and a home of her own, but has yet to raise the interest of even one suitor. As she prepares to let her dreams evaporate along with the last traces of water in her dried-out town, the charming Starbuck swoops in selling the promise of rain, and something far more dangerous: hope. Now, for the first time in her life, Lizzie has a choice.
Playing Lizzie Curry is former Pacific Theatre apprentice and promising young talent Pippa Johnstone who last year performed in The Honest Fishmongers' Measure for Measure, RealWheels' Whose Life is it Anyway? and Stone's Throw Productions' Gruesome Playground Injuries. "I love this play", she reflects on the story, "it reminds me to appreciate the simple pleasures, take joy in time spent with loved ones."
The Rainmaker will be directed by Pacific Theatre's Artistic Director Ron Reed, "I fell in love with The Rainmaker in grade twelve. I played H.C. in my high school's production and never got over that high school crush," explains Reed on the choice of play.
The cast features a blend of established, award-winning actors and promising emerging talent. Robert Salvador (Espresso), Andrew Wheeler (Re:Union), and John Voth (The Foreigner) will work alongside Peter Church (Old Time Gospel Radio Hour), Pippa Johnstone (Measure for Measure), Kenton Klassen (Gruesome Playground Injuries), and Ryan Scramstad (The Foreigner). "We've got a dream cast for one of my dream shows," says Reed, "that's a season opener."
