Off Key Improv to Present BROADWHAT?! Improvised Musical, 6/15-19

No script? No score? No problem! Local musical improv company, Off Key Improv, is thrilled to announce the premiere of BroadWHAT?! - a tip of their hats to the world of Broadway musicals. Set at the turn of the 19th century and inspired by audience suggestions, BroadWHAT?! is a two act improvised musical exploring classic character-types, songs styles and choreography from favourite musical theatre hits like Les Mise?rables, Hamilton, Rent, Wicked, Grease, The Sound of Music and more.

Off Key Improv formed in 2012, and has been razzle-dazzling audiences from Vancouver to New York ever since, with their unique brand of improvised musicals. Audiences are pulled on a wild ride as this cast of local improvisers and musicians create a brand new show right in front their eyes each and every time. The music, lyrics, stories, characters, choreography, and lighting are all improvised based on audience suggestions and whatever the moment brings.

"Since exploring a full-length musical based on a movie this past Christmas, we've wanted to pay homage to the classic Broadway show." says Artistic Director Jennifer Pielak. "We're also obsessed with Hamilton right now, so the idea of setting it in the Industrial Revolution era was met with great enthusiasm!"

"The great thing about shows like Hamilton or Spring Awakening is that they're set in a different time period, but the music is contemporary and connects well to modern audiences." says Musical Director Peter Abando. Audiences can expect diverse musical stylings reminiscent of favourites such as Les Miserables, Grease, Rent, and Wicked, to name a few. One moment you may be watching a thrilling rap battle, and the next a heart-warming ballad.

BroadWHAT?! is directed by emerging director Eleanor Felton (Eurydice, A Good Mother) with music direction by Peter Abando (Addams Family, Rent, Connected: The Musical) and features Ovation Award Winners Katie Purych (Dogfight, The It Girl) and Riley Qualtieri (Dogfight, Hunger Games: The Musical, The Last 5 Years) and other local performers Jennifer Pielak (Hunger Games: The Musical, Dogfight, Connected: The Musical), Morgan Churla (Company, Hunger Games: The Musical) and Matthew Simmons (It's A Wonderful Life Radio Show, Smoke on the Mountain).

BroadWHAT?! runs from June 15th-19th at Studio 1398 on Granville Island (1398 Cartwright Street, Vancouver). 8pm Wed-Sun and 2pm Matinees on Sat & Sun. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.offkeyimprov.com.
