Having dined at the home of the Stanleys in small town America, famous radio personality Sheridan Whiteside slips on ice on their doorstep, breaking his hip.
A tumultuous few weeks of confinement follow.
The Stanleys’ living room is monopolised by the irascible invalid and his increasingly bizarre friends and entourage; a glamorous actress and an eccentric scientist arrive
to comfort ‘poor dear Sherry’; life prisoners from the local jail are invited to lunch; gifts of penguins and an Egyptian mummy case are delivered...
Amidst this chaos, love blossoms, tempers become increasingly frayed and devilish schemes are hatched as Whiteside ensures everyone dances to his tune.
