TV's Matt Lapinskas Stars As Frankenstein At Exeter Rep

Matt Lapinskas, an audience favourite as Anthony Moon in Eastenders and runner-up in Dancing on Ice, stars in the world premiere of 'Frankenstein' at the Exeter Rep this Spring. This is the second production for the new regional rep company, following the critically-lauded 'Twelfth Night' in February.

Matt plays the tortured student of science in this 200th Anniversary staging of Mary Shelley's Gothic classic. Forget bolts through necks and campy melodramas; this visceral new staging employs the physical style of Theatre de Complicité to explore the complex psychology of Man and Monster.

The recent backlash to The Sun's "snowflake" comments criticizing sympathy for Frankenstein's Creature highlight the on-going tension between the common misconception that 'Frankenstein' is a simplistic horror story, and the much more interesting truth that Shelley's novel is a fascinating commentary on Man's responsibilities in all we do and all we make.

Matt is joined by 'Poldark' regular, Derek Frood, Philip Voyzey ('Les Liaisons Dangereuses' national tour) and newcomer Will Trafford, a professionally-trained dancer, whose physical skills will be tested to the maximum as he portrays the Creature in a wholly new way.

With a script that comprises 80% of original text from the novel, this is surely one of the most faithful, yet innovative stagings of the Gothic classic to date!

The production is designed and directed by Ian Berry ('Twelfth Night') with sound design by Amy Spencer and lighting by Will Tippett.
