Royal Albert Hall presents The Unclosed Eye: A Photographic Exhibition by David Redfern from Thursday 10 December through Wednesday 13 January.  As part of their free exhibition series, they are offering free entry when attending a performance or on the open days listed.

As part of the Hall’s reflect series, The Unclosed Eye covers 50 years of popular music photography seen through the eyes of David Redfern.Through black & white and colour images largely printed direct from the original negative or transparency, this exhibition has an emphasis on the fabulous 60s & 70s eras, but does include some of his most recent work.

David Redfern began his career in the twilight jazz clubs of London in the early 1960’s, risking his one and only camera amongst the jiving teenage crowds.  The British Trad boom was under way and his first published photos featured Kenny Ball, Chris Barber, George Melly, and the old Marquee Club. By day David began photographing TV Shows like  Ready Steady Go, Thank Your Lucky Stars, and Jazz 625, resulting in now classic shots of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, Bill Evans, and Duke Ellington. Evenings were spent photographing major shows and concerts at the 100 Club, Ronnie Scott’s or the Marquee, covering the whole field of popular music, producing iconic images of Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, and Miles Davis to name just a few. David sold Redferns Music Picture Library to Getty Images in December 2009, but is still very active marketing his prints and photographing at clubs, concerts and festivals all over the world.

This exhibition takes place around the ground floor corridor of the Royal Albert Hall from Thursday 10 December - Wednesday 13 January. You can view it when attending performances or by calling in on one of the following free open days:

Saturday 12 December     10am- 12.30pm

Saturday 9 January           10am - 1pm

The event is presented by Royal Albert Hall and David Redfern with kind support from Graham Harrison Framing Ltd and Suzy Reed.
