Set in post war Paris, the plot centres around a shy civil servant, Dusoleil, who lives alone and works in a soul destroying office job under a tyrannical boss, his hardworking attitude is unpopular with his co-workers and to pass the lonely hours he fantasises about Isabelle, the beautiful wife of the prosecutor-general. Magically acquiring the ability to walk through walls, Dusoleil becomes a 'Robin Hood' figure, stealing from the rich to give to the poor and, gaining confidence as Passepartout, he is able to woo Isabelle. Eventually caught he is put on trial and, facing the prosecutor, Isabelle saves the day by revealing the prosecutor general's secret past as a Nazi. Isabelle and Dusoleil finally spend a romantic night together. However their romance is short lived when Dusoleil mistakenly takes tablets prescribed by the doctor, thinking they are aspirin, they remove his magical powers and he becomes stuck, mid leap, in a wall.
