Brighton Youth Center Presents THE BRIGHTON & HOVE YOUTH POETS vs MCs SLAM, May 29

By:

Brighton's legendary Poets vs MCs event has become an unmissable fixture in Brighton's cultural calendar - now in its 10th year, it's sold out venues as large as the Concorde 2 and involves more spats, cusses and wordplay than any hip-hop album you could name.

Now meet its younger, wilder sibling. For the first time ever, as part of Brighton Fringe, the Brighton & Hove Youth Poets vs MCs Slam (or BITE! to it's friends) is rolling into town - are you ready?

Aided by a multi-talented entourage of Poet and MC coaches, with a host of workshops in schools and youth centres under their belt, Brighton and Hove's most scintillating young wordsmiths will be doing battle in a boxing ring at Brighton Youth Centre on Wednesday 29th May. But the gloves are off for this tournament - they'll have nothing but a microphone and their wits to verbally spar their opponents into submission.

Featuring rapper-turned-UK-Poetry-Slam-champion Adam Kammerling (alongside producer and musican Cuth) as very special guests, this is a showcase of the spoken word like no other - and should leave poets and rappers of more mature years looking to their laurels as the next generation takes the stage.

Michael James Parker, Project Manager of Bite!, said "Over the past two months the highly skilled word-warriors of Brighton's performance poetry and hip hop scenes have been sharing their skills and battle strategies with young people across Brighton and Hove, and now the youth teams are ready to take each other on. There will be (metaphorical) blood!"

BITE! is presented by Adventure Poetry and Hammer and Tongue, both of which are organisations dedicated to the facilitation and promotion of live literature and give new poets and spoken word artists a stage on which they can flourish.

The project is funded by Arts Council England and Brighton and Hove City Council and is supported by Apples and Snakes.
