De nieuwe musical van de Royal Shakespeare Company, DE JONGEN DIE DE WIND TEMDE, is officieel geopend in het Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon op donderdag 19 februari. Bekijk de foto's van de openingsavondviering.
Het gezelschap vierde de openingsavond samen met William Kamkwamba, Bryan Mealer, Tom Rielly en Chiwetel Ejiofor, evenals familie, vrienden en genodigden. Tijdens het applaus, dat een staande ovatie kreeg, voegde Kamkwamba zich bij de cast op het podium voor de buigingen.
DE JONGEN DIE DE WIND TEMDE is momenteel te zien in het Swan Theatre tot en met 28 maart 2026. De productie zal daarna verhuizen naar @sohoplace in de West End van Londen voor een strikt beperkte run van 12 weken van 25 april tot en met 18 juli 2026.
Aangepast van het boek van William Kamkwamba en Bryan Mealer en de film van Potboiler Productions, bevat de musical een boek en teksten van Richy Hughes en muziek en teksten van Tim Sutton. De productie is geregisseerd door Lynette Linton.
Het verhaal volgt William Kamkwamba, die besluit een windmolen te bouwen om zijn dorp te redden van hongersnood tijdens een verwoestende droogte. Met beperkte middelen—bibliotheekboeken en oud ijzer—probeert William de verwachtingen te trotseren en kracht en hoop naar zijn gemeenschap te brengen.
De cast bestaat uit Madeline Appiah (Agnes Kamkwamba), Lori Barker (Ensemble), Tsemaye Bob-Egbe (Annie Kamkwamba), Owen Chaponda (Mike Kachigunda/Blessings), McCallam Connell (Chief Wimbe), Eddie Elliott (Jeremiah Kamkwamba/Patience), Tad Hapaguti (Offstage Understudy), Daniel Haswell (Offstage Understudy), Shaka Kalokoh (Charity), Idriss Kargbo (Gilbert Mofat), Newtion Matthews (Mister Ofesi), Sifiso Mazibuko (Trywell Kamkwamba), Choolwe Laina Muntanga (Mika Kamkwamba), Alistair Nwachukwu (William Kamkwamba), Tomi Ogbaro (Mizeck), Alex Okoampa (Ensemble), Yana Penrose (Khamba) en Helena Pipe (Edith Sikelo).

De productie werd in opdracht gegeven door de Royal Shakespeare Company en wordt gepresenteerd in samenwerking met Kenny Wax Limited en Chuchu Nwagu Productions.
