Thought For Food to Present DARK HEART World Premiere This Winter

"There's death in this errand. Be careful it isn't yours..."

Thought For Food presents the world premiere of Dark Heart, on stage January 24 - February 11 at The Assembly Theatre. Tickets $25, on sale A. Brown Paper Tickets.

New France, 1661. A young French bride disappears into the forest. Has she run off to be with her lover, or is there something more sinister in the woods? While rumours of a supernatural creature spread through the settlement, everyone seems to be hunting for the missing woman, including an Indigenous fur trapper, the local doctor, a newly-arrived French soldier, and her jealous husband. But perhaps one of them is the beast that they fear.

Dark Heart is a suspenseful new play that retells the story of New France as a taut historical thriller. Touching on the European myth of the loup-garou (werewolf) and Indigenous legends of shape-shifting, this play challenges the traditional colonial narrative by giving a strong voice to both female and Indigenous characters. Thought For Food is proud to be presenting the premiere of Genevieve Adam's second script in the New France Trilogy, a prequel to her 2015 SummerWorks hit Deceitful Above All Things (Outstanding New Play, NOW Magazine).

The cast is led by playwright Genevieve Adam (Measure for Measure, Thought For Food; The Handmaid's Tale, Hulu), and features the work of Blackfoot actor Garret C. Smith (reprising his role as Toussaint from Deceitful Above All Things), and Métis actor Brianne Tucker (Spirit Horse, Roseneath Theatre). Rounding out the cast is John Fitzgerald Jay (I Send You This Cadmium Red, Art of Time Ensemble/Canstage), Michael Iliadis (Reign, The CW), Paul Rivers (The Memo, Thought For Food; 12 Monkeys, Syfy), and Audrey Clairman (Julius Caesar, St. Lawrence Shakespeare Festival).

Directed by Tyler J. Seguin (Measure for Measure, Thought For Food; Treasure Island, Stratford Festival - Assistant Director), with intimacy and fight direction by Siobhan Richardson (The Trial of Judith K., Thought For Food), Dark Heart features set and costume design by Nancy Anne Perrin (Stratford Festival - Guthrie Award), lighting design by Imogen Wilson (Swordplay: A Play of Swords, Sex-T Rex) and original composition & sound design by Alex Eddington (The Memo and The Trial of Judith K., Thought For Food), featuring music by Métis fiddler Alyssa Delbaere-Sawchuk, recorded specifically for the show.
