The Trojan Women, playing at Alumnae Theatre, is one of two re-imagined Greek tragedies playing on Toronto stages – and both The Trojan Women and The Penelopiad, produced by Nightwood Theatre and playing at Buddies in Bad Times, have been written by eminent Canadian poets, Gwendolyn MacEwen and Margaret Atwood.
Directed by Alexandra Seay (Lincoln Center Theatre Directors Lab member) with original musical compositions by Lily Ling (Soulpepper; Acting Upstage; Studio 180), Alumnae Theatre’s production of MacEwen’s translation of The Trojan Women is presented as part of our ‘Countdown to 100 Years’.
About the show: "In the aftermath of the Trojan War, abandoned by the gods, the women of Troy try to find meaning in the destruction surrounding them as they wait to be claimed by their Greek masters. In 1978, celebrated Canadian poet Gwendolyn MacEwen breathed a contemporary spirit into Euripides’ classic text with her bold exploration of feminist ideals. In 2012, director Alexandra Seay asks who the women are who live beneath the shadow of men today and strives to give them a voice."
