Agneya Named Recipient of 2026 Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award by Toronto Arts Foundation
The Indo-Canadian percussionist and composer receives a $10,000 prize at OLG Village during Toronto Jazz Festival.
Toronto Arts Foundation has announced Agneya, an Indo-Canadian percussionist and composer, as the recipient of the 2026 Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award, presented at 6:15 p.m. at OLG Village, 115 Cumberland St., as part of the Toronto Jazz Festival.
Established in 2014, the Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award celebrates Toronto's outstanding jazz artists who are either in the early stages of their professional careers or who are new to pursuing a solo career after supporting other artists. The award includes a $10,000 cash prize for the recipient, with finalist prizes also generously supported by Michael Bourgeois and Marilyn Legge.
Based in Toronto and raised in India, Agneya's work blends South Asian rhythmic cycles, West African grooves, and jazz improvisation to create an immersive sound shaped by his global journey. He has performed locally and internationally at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, Humboldt Forum, Berliner Hoffest, Dokkhuset Scene, and NH7 Weekender, among others.
“As a drummer and composer, I understand rhythm not only as a musical element but as a way of listening, relating, and making sense of the world,” says 2026 Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award recipient Agneya. “I grew up in Western India surrounded by classical and folk traditions, and later immersed myself in jazz and contemporary music after moving to Toronto. Over time, these influences stopped feeling separate and began to feel like parts of one language,” says Agenya.
“The Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award was created to reward excellence and further the careers of emerging jazz artists, providing the support and recognition they need to flourish,” says Toronto Arts Foundation CEO Kelly Langgard. “We're proud to shine a light on the extraordinary talent and promise in our local jazz community and support artists in their creative journeys,” says Langgard.
The 2026 Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award finalists, below, won a prize of $2,000 each, also generously supported by Michael Bourgeois and Marilyn Legge.
Jon Catanus is a drummer whose musical philosophy is rooted in “diskarte,” which loosely translates to “hustle,” and in a unique approach to overcoming obstacles. Outside his own band “Diskarte,” Jon carries his “diskarte” with him, collaborating with creative forces in Toronto such as Jennarie, Orbital Ensemble, & Next Perfect Day.
Julian Anderson-Bowes is an acoustic and electric bassist, improviser and composer hailing from Toronto. He performs with a wide range of artists from the jazz, folk, and pop worlds, and regularly composes and presents his original music with a shifting cast of Toronto's finest musicians.
The Breakthrough Jazz Artist Award is the final Toronto Arts Award to be distributed in 2026. The Celebration of Cultural Life Award, Muriel Sherrin Award, Community Arts Award, Che Kothari Artist and Instigator Award, Arts for Youth Award, and Breakthrough Artist Award were all presented in April at the Mayor's Arts Lunch, hosted by special guest Mayor Olivia Chow. Six Newcomer Artist Awards were distributed earlier in April at the Toronto Arts Foundation's Awards Season Kick-Off event. Combined, the 2026 Toronto Arts Awards provided more than $119,000 to artists across disciplines.
