Tarragon Presents the Toronto Premiere of WAS SPRING, 4/4-5/6

Tarragon Theatre will present the Toronto premiere of Was Spring, written and directed by the multi-talented, award-winning playwright, director, actor and filmmaker, Daniel MacIvor.
Was Spring previews from March 27, opens Wednesday April 4 and runs to May 6 in Tarragon Theatre's Extra Space. Somewhere in the pain there is love, somewhere in tragedy there is meaning but when you've been betrayed by your own dreams and a lifetime's worth of guilt, can you still find it? Together, Kit (Jessica Moss), Kath (Caroline Gillis) and Kitty (Clare Coulter), attempt to reconnect and are reminded winter eventually leads to spring. Was Spring is a powerful exploration of the stories we are afraid to tell. One of Canada's best known playwrights, and currently a playwright-in-residence at Tarragon, Daniel MacIvor has written and directed numerous award-winning productions since he began creating theatre in 1986. MacIvor's previous productions at Tarragon include Communion(2010), A Beautiful View (2009), How It Works (2007) and Somewhere I Have Never Travelled (1988).MacIvor received the Governor General's Literary Award for Drama twice, first for his play House and again in 2006 for his collection of plays I Still Love You. He was awarded the prestigious Elinore & Lou Siminovitch Prize in Theatre for Playwriting in 2008. With long-time collaborator Daniel Brooks, he created the solo performances House, Here Lies Henry, Monster, Cul-de-sac and This is What Happens Next. Other writing credits include See Bob Run, Wild Abandon, You Are Here, Never Swim Alone and JUMP. He has also won numerous Dora Awards both for acting and directing and won a GLAAD Award and a Village Voice Obie Award in 2002 for his play In On It. His play Marion Bridge received its off-Broadway premiere in New York in October of 2005. In 2007, his play His Greatness won the Jessie Richardson Award for Best New Play in Vancouver. From 1987 to 2007 with Sherrie Johnson he ran da da kamera, a respected international touring company which brought his work to Australia, the UK and throughout the US and Canada. Currently, MacIvor divides his time between Toronto and Nova Scotia.Was Spring showcases a powerful cast of three fine actresses: Clare Coulter as Kitty (last seen at Tarragon in Good Bones by Margaret Atwood, directed by Urjo Kareda in 1999; Other Tarragon: Top Girls - Dora Award; John Murrell's Waiting for the Parade, October; Judith Thompson's I Am Yours, White Biting Dog, Lion in the Streets; English premieres of Michel Tremblay's Saint Carmen of the Main; Damnée Manon, Sacrée Sandra; Albertine, in Five Times; The Real World?; Wallace Shawn's The Fever, Aunt Dan and Lemon, The Designated Mourner; Sessions, co-created with Daniel MacIvor and Daniel Brooks); Caroline Gillis as Kath (Tarragon: After Akhmatova; Daniel MacIvor's Communion, A Beautiful View, How It Works, Somewhere I Have Never Travelled) and Jessica Moss as Kit (Tarragon debut). Daniel MacIvor directs and the designers are Kimberly Purtell (set and lighting - Communion, How It Works), Shawn Kerwin (costumes -Communion, How It Works), and Verne Good (sound - Communion). Matthew MacKenzie is the Assistant Director and Kristen Kitcher is the stage manager.
