Manitoba Commits $15m To Restore Pantages Playhouse Theatre In Winnipeg

The Manitoba government has announced a $15 million investment toward the restoration of the Pantages Playhouse Theatre, advancing plans to reopen the long-closed venue as a revitalized cultural hub.

The theatre, which has been shuttered since 2018 due to aging infrastructure and the cost of repairs, is expected to undergo extensive upgrades aimed at preserving its historic features while modernizing its performance capabilities.

“This facility has served our community and now we’re so happy that future generations of Manitobans will be able to learn about what makes life worth living in this part of the world by attending events here and, of course, connecting with arts and culture,” said Premier Wab Kinew.

Originally built during the vaudeville era, the century-old theatre has hosted performers including Charlie Chaplin, Harry Houdini, and Ella Fitzgerald. In later decades, it became a venue for concerts, graduations, and community events, and was designated a national historic site in 1989.

The restoration is being led by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in partnership with the Performing Arts Consortium of Winnipeg. Plans include upgraded staging, improved acoustics, and a reconfigured interior with approximately 1,100 seats. The theatre will also serve as the orchestra’s permanent home once completed.

Some larger orchestral performances are expected to remain at the Centennial Concert Hall, located across the street.

Officials are targeting a reopening in 2029. The province is also seeking an additional $22 million in federal funding to support the full scope of the project.
