Variety reports that the Toronto production of Dirty Dancing scored a record-breaking C$1,867,880 ($1.65 million) in its first on-sale day Monday. These grosses do not include subscriptions or group revenues.

"This is by far the biggest sales day we've ever had," stated David Mervis to Variety. Mervis will be presenting the North American premiere of Dirty Dancing with his father, Ed, by arrangement with Jacobsen Entertainment and in association with Lionsgate and Magic Hour Productions.

Based on the popular 1987 coming of age film written by Eleanor Bergstein and starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, the stage adaptation has already broken box office records in London, Germany and Australia. The Toronto production starts previews Oct. 31, at the Royal Alexandra Theater.
