Canopy Theatre Company Presents LYSISTRATA
The talented and exuberant group of emergent artists that form Canopy Theatre Company will take to Philosopher Walk's unique outdoor stage for the 11th year. This season they explore one of ancient Greece's greatest comedies, Germaine Greer's adaptation of Aristophanes' hilarious battle of the sexes, Lysistrata -the sex strike. The show will run from Wednesday, July 20 through to Saturday, August 6, 2011. Canopy Theatre Company looks forward to another year as the destination for Outdoor Theatre for Downtown Toronto.
Details: Known for its bawdy humour, Lysistrata - the sex strike tells the tale of how one woman encourages a nation of lustful ladies to deny their husbands any sexual attention until the men declare peace and put a stop to civil war. Germaine Greer's adaptation keeps all of the expected phalli, sexually charged hijinks and anti-war rhetoric while also exploring issues of gender politics and class bias. Guaranteed to be the sexiest production ever seen on Philosopher's Stage, Lysistrata - the sex strike comes with a 'mature content' warning: This is not a family show!
Andrea Wasserman, Canopy Theatre Company's Artistic Director, directs this bawdy, bathhouse adaptation where no joke is too cheap or tawdry. Costume Designer, Ming Wong is charged with the task of outfitting a large cast of 19 with character inspired towel arrangements that compliment Greer's bathhouse setting.
The company members of Lysistrata -the sex strike reflect Canopy's tradition of being one of Toronto's premiere showcases for emerging theatrical talent while offering its audience a mix of some familiar faces and refreshing new blood. Below are just a few of the faces with whom Canopy is honoured to share the stage this summer.
