ISSAQUAH, WA –Village Theatre's Artistic Director Steve Tomkins 'dreamed a dream' many years ago when he first saw actor Greg Stone perform in Les Misérables. After directing Stone in Jesus Christ Superstar in 1993 Tomkins wondered, “Could I put together my 'dream cast,' that included Stone, and present this monstrous legendary mega-hit musical Les Misérables at Village Theatre?” Scheduling conflicts, rights issues and budget constraints stood in his way, but much like the character Jean Valjean, Tomkins persisted. Over a decade later the stage production rights became available for a short window of time (that window closes when the Broadway revival of Les Misérables opens in March of 2014) and Tomkins got to work putting the many pieces together for a Village Theatre production.

I do not think it is out of line to say Les Miserables has been the most anticipated production on the Beef and Boards Dinner Theatre's 2013 lineup. Some hoping it would be great, others certain it would not be.
Fans of the show LES MISERABLES have had a smorgasbord of productions to choose from in central Ohio this year. After Cameron Mackintosh LTD released the rights to the musical to coincide with the release of the movie, several high schools and community theaters have taken on the massive task of presenting the musical.
Victor Hugo's epic novel Les Miserables has become one of the world's most successful and beloved musicals. Alain Boublil first got the idea to adapt the novel to stage while watching a production of OLIVER! In London. He pitched the idea to French composer Claude-Michel Schonberg. LES MISERABLES was first staged in 1980, and over 500,000 people saw it across its 100 performances. The first production in English, produced by Cameron Mackintosh and adapted and directed by Trevor Nunn and John Caird, opened in 1985 in London. This production instantly became a phenomenon, and is still running (with revisions and alterations to the book and staging). LES MISERABLES first opened on Broadway in 1987 and ran through 2003. It was revived in 2006 and will be revived on Broadway again in 2014. Currently, Bayou City Theatrics is presenting a pared down LES MISERABLES that is also the first all-Houston talent production of the musical.
