As part of its 59th season in the community, Conejo Players Theatre is staging Mel Brooks' monstrously funny musical, Young Frankenstein, July 14 through August 13, 2017, in Thousand Oaks.

Taking inspiration from Brooks' struggle to make the film in black and white in the '70s, the CPT musical will be presented in the stage equivalent of monochrome.

When Brooks and co-writer Gene Wilder started work on the Young Frankenstein film, they insisted the movie be released in black and white as an homage to 1930s monster movies. Columbia Pictures didn't think people would go see it, so Brooks and Wilder fought back -- eventually taking the film to 20th Century Fox to ensure their vision would be upheld.

With that level of commitment to the vision in mind, director Tami Keaton has stylized her production to include that black and white feel. "Obviously, for the stage, we can't go completely black and white -- but we're trying to honor the spirit of the film by using lots of blacks, greys, and deep colors," she said. "We're also using animated projections to really reinforce that 'old movie' feel."

With a stellar cast and creative team -- including music director Lisa Yaldezian, choreographer Amie Woolweber, and producer Jeremy Zeller -- Conejo Players' Young Frankenstein is sure to be this summer's blockbuster hit!
