This is the first opera we see Mozart working on near the beginning of the Oscar-winning movie AMADEUS. It's the crazy story of two men rescuing their girlfriends who have been kidnapped and sequestered at a Turkish harem, or seraglio. Wolfgang blends high comedy with touching tragedy, and he flavors the music with extra percussion - evoking the military bands of Turkey. Mozart had singing virtuosi in mind when he composed the opera. Often called a concerto for voice, St. Petersburg Opera Company's production of Abduction from the Seraglio promises an evening of dazzling voices paired with hysterical hijinks and beautiful music.
