Five years after his last acclaimed performance as Alf Cook, Grant Dodwell will return for a strictly limited event replacing an unwell Paul Hanlon.
Alf is the jagged heart of Alan Seymour’s masterpiece - man whose pride is built on the ruins of the past, now facing a son determined to tear it all down.
This isn't just a revival; it’s a reckoning. Experience Dodwell’s veteran presence as he navigates the explosive territory between a father’s sacred tradition and a son’s brutal truth.
Director Les Solomon said: "Unfortunately Paul Hanlon had to withdraw from the play reading for personal reasons but we are thrilled to welcome back Grant Dodwell who played the role of "Alf" so well in our 2021 reading of this play. Grant of course is so well known to older audiences for his many years the TV series "A Country Practice" and his more recent work for filming Australian theatre. We are thrilled that he is able to join us."
The play revolves around the Cook family and the tension created when firebrand son Hughie, challenges his father Alf on his attitude toward Anzac Day. Hughie and his girlfriend plan to document Anzac Day for the university newspaper, focusing on its traditional binge drinking. This year, for the first time in his life, Hughie refuses to attend the dawn service with his dad; he soon becomes torn between outrage at the display on the day and his love of his father.
