THE BLACK SPIDER Comes To Theater Basel

By: Sep. 26, 2018

THE BLACK SPIDER Comes To Theater Basel ImageTheater Basel presents THE BLACK SPIDER, based on the novel by Jeremias Gotthelf, running from Sept. 25 to Oct. 5.

Indications in the story suggest that the danger comes from outside: The order of knights, who dominated the medieval peasantry tyrannically, adopted pagan manners at the crusades and occupies the village with almost unworkable frolicking. And even the woman who negotiates with the devil for the well-being and woe of the village is not a local. But even at the beginning of the dilemma, the coming catastrophe seems inevitable - the course of the story has only an effect on its shape. The black spider, which haunts the village at the same time, appears as a futuristic image of the fear with which the farmers look into the future, and finally lives on in the woods.

As in the village society, the interests of the collective and individual are negotiated and represented, the director Tilmann Köhler examines in his adaptation for the stage and the present time. His productions are characterized by clear images, a great literary feeling and a decided look at the present. Currently he works u. a. at the Deutsches Theater Berlin, at the Oper Frankfurt, at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and for the first time at the Theater Basel. After "Schlafgänger", "Farinet" and "Goldrausch" over the past two seasons, this work continues our examination of Swiss prose literature.
