The Round Barn Theatre to Introduce ASL Interpreters at THE MIRACLE WORKER

By:

The Round Barn Theatre at Amish Acres has announced a collaboration with the American Sign Language Interpretation Department of Goshen College to have Sign Language interpreters translate select performances on the Joseph Stein Stage.

The first production to be interpreted will be The Miracle Worker (October 19 - November 6), the true story of Helen Keller (the deaf and blind author, political activist, and lecturer), and her teacher Annie Sullivan, who managed to teach Helen to communicate through the silence and darkness that comprised her daily life.

"We felt that The Miracle Worker would be a very poignant production to begin this collaboration," said Artistic Director, Amber Burgess. "The story is of particular interest to the deaf and hearing impaired community, and I wanted those patrons to have the opportunity to experience this amazing narrative in their first language, American Sign Language."

Goshen College offers a Bachelor's Degree in Sign Language Interpretation, and the new association gives students the opportunity to translate scripts into American Sign Language, and perform their translations with a professional interpreter in front of a live audience. Not only does this benefit the students of Goshen College, it will benefit the deaf community and The Round Barn Theatre's hearing impaired patrons.

The Miracle Worker will have live American Sign Language interpreters during the performance at 2:00pm on Saturday, November 5th, and the holiday favorite, A Christmas Story: The Musical will be interpreted at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 3rd.

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Box Office at 800-800-4942 ext. 2 or online at www.amishacres.com.
