THE CHRISTIAN Coming Soon To Actors Theatre of Louisville
![]()
A mega church completes a multi-million-dollar capital campaign to build a fabulous new facility. The long-time pastor announces during a Sunday sermon following the grand opening that Jesus Christ isn't the only way to salvation, there's no such thing as hell, and forgiveness for all sins must be the order of the day for all who call themselves Christian. It's the beginning of an emotionally explosive 100-minute, no intermission production that delves into the nature of accountability, acceptance, and forgiveness.
This brilliant play, the hit of the 2014 Humana Festival of New American Plays, produced by Actors Theatre of Louisville, explores not only the nature of Christianity, but also the role and responsibility of a leader. What happens when a leader makes a radical shift in his way of thinking? Do his followers follow without question the new direction? Do those followers puzzle and probe over the change of direction to determine for themselves whether that change is for them?
Playwright Lucas Hnath has carefully constructed a full-length play around an opening sermon and five scenes with a live gospel choir providing appropriate music that enhances the storytelling throughout. During the pastor's journey, he is forced to confront his hubris and face the consequences. Martha Jacobs brings her experienced direction to this production and Pam Blevins Hinkle, Director of Spirit & Place Festival, leads the choir.
The Christians runs March 28- April 14, Thursdays at 7 pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, and Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Tickets are $33-39, available at the Box Office by calling 317-635-7529 or visiting PhoenixTheatre.org. Don't miss this thought-provoking show at Phoenix Theatre, always different, always unique!
