On Broadway Presents IS IT BECAUSE I'M JACK?, Opens 9/26

By:

Jack has a stellar cast of young actors with established theatrical and television backgrounds. In the title role is Clyde Berning, best known for his leading role on MNet's Known Gods and recently seen on Cape Town stage in the Maynardville production of Antony and Cleopatra. Anele Matoti plays the terminally funny character of Farai. Anele comes to Jack with years of television experience under his belt - eTV's Shooting Stars and MNET's League of Glory amongst them. Morne Visser, recently seen as Dr Sparks in Nu Metro's SKIN, plays the businessman Marty, while Andrew Laubscher is Tim - a recently ordained Catholic Priest. Laubscher has a theatrical following from his leads in Maynardville productions and can currently be seen in the Mechanicals' Lunatic Fringe repertory season.

The cast are all directed by the multi-talented arts producer, director, educator, writer and actor, Yvette Hardie.
A comedy about mortality? If anyone can tackle that, it's van Graan, who has never shied away from controversial and provocative themes. "If I have a brand as a playwright, then it is that I engage with the pressing macro political, social and economic issues of the day. Is it Because I'm Jack? is my first largely character- (rather than issue-) driven dark comedy. It still raises provocative questions that will hopefully have audiences thinking for some time afterwards, but it allows - and challenges - me to grow as a writer, while having some fun."

Is It Because I'm Jack? will premiere on September 26th at Aardklop arts festival - who commissioned the play - in Potchefstroom. This is a second Aardklop commission for Van Graan, with the first commission, Die Generaal, picking up the Fleur du Cap Best New Script award in 2008.
Capetonians will be the first to see the play after the Aardklop Arts Festival as it moves immediately to On Broadway's new premises in Long Street, Cape Town where it run from 5th - 16th October. The play will then run at the State Theatre in Pretoria from the 18th - 30th October.
This promises to be the comedy to see this spring. Be sure to catch it!
