KALAHARI KAROO BLUES Comes to Cape Town's Baxter Theatre, Now thru Jan 19

By:

David Kramer Productions presents KALAHARI KAROO BLUES at the Baxter Theatre, 9 - 19 January.

In KALAHARI KAROO BLUES, an exclusive concert for Cape Town, David Kramer is once again presenting the unusual and sometimes very old music styles from the far corners of Southern Africa - the Kalahari, the Hardeveld and the Klein Karoo. From the one stringed Kalahari 'segaba' of Oteng Piet, the upside-down guitar styling of Ronnie Moipolai, the sounds of the handmade fenjoro violin of Babsi Barolong, and the incredible teaspoon slide playing of Hannes Coetzee, Kramer will be on stage exploring the connections of ancient stringed instruments to their modern counterparts. Ronnie Moipolai, who like Hannes Coetzee, has become a YouTube cult figure with his upside-down left hand "katara" styling and his flamboyant bass-string technique has to be seen to be believed. It will be the first time that Moipolai will perform outside of Botswana.

In addition to the flamboyant guitarists, David has also invited Mary Kriel, a folksinger from Vredendal, who accompanies herself on a coffee tin and the well-known Sonskynsusters who have sung with him on previous occasions.

More than a decade ago, Kramer presented a concert series called KAROO KITAAR BLUES, bringing for the first time to the stage a group of musicians who played music and instruments from a bygone era. David had met these somewhat eccentric folk musicians while making a documentary film on guitar players of South Africa and he was fascinated by the way they tuned and played their instruments.

KALAHARI KAROO BLUES performances are Tuesday to Saturday at 8pm until 19 January only, at the Baxter Theatre, with tickets from R110 to R160 via Computicket.
