A COUCH & A POTATO Comes to Alexander Upstairs

Jo, a recent divorcée, arrives for her first session with Carl Zimmerman, a Cape Town psychologist. Carl's consulting room is on the corner of Loop and Strand and apart from the expected couch contains a Steinway baby-grand. (Carl is also a wannabe songwriter and often surprises his clients by using music therapy to work through their divorce issues.) In one 70mn musical rollercoaster-ride they laugh, cry, share and lay bare their broken hearts through song and chat and by the end of the session we could almost believe that these two total strangers are ready to fall in love again.

A Couch & a Piano previews on 4th August at Alexander Upstairs followed by a two-week run in Johannesburg at Theatre on the Square, 14th August. After ten years playing and singing for the international crème de la crème at the Steinways of London's 5-star venues and exclusive clubs, The Ritz, Carlton, Dorchester, Mayfair, Park Lane Intercontinental, South African born Cat Simoni is now entertaining audiences countrywide. Alan co-created the highly successful children's music series Beautiful Creatures with Ed Jordan & Paul Choritz. With their seven albums they have achieved two platinum, four gold albums in SA, two SAMA nominations & a Naledi award. They have five children's books, and are represented on ITunes throughout the world. Alan's children's book 'Oliver's Outline' was published by Pan Macmillan in 2015. Alan's theatre career began with the acclaimed accapella cabaret group Not the Midnight Mass in 1988, which won a Dalro Cabaret Revue Award, Evening Post Award & a Vita nomination. Alan does numerous TV & radio voice-overs, and for produces large corporate events. A member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for 7 years, Paul has since acted and directed in theatres from London to Copenhagen, Vienna to Tokyo. Paul writes and directs Cat Simoni's musical entertainments.
