What did our critic think of THE PROM at Porthouse Theatre/Kent State University?

Dear Evan Hansen at Connor Palace is a top-ranking musical drama that highlights social anxiety, suicide, family angst, and teenage drug addiction. Based on real-life incidents, it explores the complexities of mental health and societal investigation. With a pop-contemporary musical theatre sound, it is a must-see musical for those interested in boundary-pushing storytelling.

INTO THE WOODS is a musical with a book by James Lapine and music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

A boy and girl falling in love, a vengeful mother-in-law hunting an alleged kidnapper, and ... a group of Freemasons completing their initiation rituals? Mozart's The Magic Flute is full of surprises at Chicago's Lyric Opera. For opera fans, the greatest surprise of all may be the show's unusual production style which relies exclusively on a projected animated backdrop for both set and props, hearkening back to the Nickelodeon era of the 1910s. Spectators who delight in edgy and creative reinterpretations of classic pieces will be sure to enjoy this production-but those who appreciate the extravagance of the traditional opera may find it wanting.

THE LION KING, whose North American touring company, which recently opened in CLE's Playhouse Square's Key Bank State Theatre, has an enviable record. It is the third longest running show in Broadway history, clocking a little over 9,300 curtain raisers. Only THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (12,370) and the revival of CHICAGO (9,692) have had longer Great White way runs.

Madison Lyric Stage, a professional theater company serving the Connecticut shoreline and the Connecticut River valley, will present Mart Crowley’s landmark play The Boys in the Band for eight performances July 22 – August 1.  Both hilarious and poignant, the dark comedy will be presented outdoors under a large tent on the grounds of Madison’s Deacon John Grave House.

This hybrid co-production of Hold These Truths marked San Francisco Playhouse’s return to in-person performances and was also available for audiences to enjoy at home on-demand. San Francisco Playhouse followed strict health and safety protocols to minimize risks to patrons, actors, and staff.
