What did our critic think of MOULIN ROUGE! THE MUSICAL at KEY BANK STATE?

Moulin Rouge! is based on the 2001 Baz Luhrmann film of the same name and originally starred Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. Known for its somber tale and use of modern music in a vintage setting, the story and its elements translated extremely well to the stage while also being different enough to appreciate the stage musical in its own right. The updated music for a 2023 audience, a strong cast and crew, and a tale of desperate, devoted love all make this production Moulin Rouge! excel beyond the surface of the fantasy.

What did our critic think of COME FROM AWAY at Broadway San Jose? Broadway San Jose's Come From Away is far and away a show of delight, laughter, pathos and altogether great story-telling. The show - with book, music and lyrics by Irene Sankoff and David Hein - 'tells the true story of 38 planes and almost 7,000 passengers from around the world that were diverted to the small community of Gander, Newfoundland on September 11, 2001, doubling its population in an instant.' Using a documentary theater approach, Sankoff and Hein drew from interviews with the people of Gander and 'the plane people,' as they affectionately came to be called, to craft their loving, hugely funny and deeply touching show.

Walnut Street Theatre's 2017-18 Independence Studio on 3 Season concludes with Andrew Lloyd Webber's romantic musical TELL ME ON A SUNDAY. Directed by Debi Marcucci and starring The Phantom of the Opera's Julia Udine, the production begins with previews on April 10th, opens on April 12th, and continues through June 10th in the Walnut's Independence Studio on 3.

URINETOWN: THE MUSICAL, opens at the Chanticleer Theatre in Council Bluffs, Iowa tonight and runs through March 18. If you loved SOMETHING ROTTEN, you will love this crazy show. Nothing is free from biting satire: corporate greed, populism, or even your most loved musicals.

San Jose Stage Company continues their Season 35 honoring an American Theatre icon who shaped the very core of their organization with their presentation of Sam Shepard's Fool for Love. This cowboy romance dissects the poignant causes and effects of love lost through the retrospective eyes of two past lovers.

The Theatre Group at SBCC opens the 17/18 season with Cole Porter's sparkling musical, HIGH SOCIETY, July 12-29 in the Garvin Theatre. 

The Public Theater presents the new musical Southern Comfort, the true story of a group of transgender friends living life on their own terms in the back hills of rural Georgia,  directed by Thomas Caruso and based on the film by Kate Davis. Southern Comfort features book and lyrics by Dan Collins, music by Julianne Wick Davis, choreography by Ryan Kasprzak, and was conceived for the stage by Robert DuSold and Thomas Caruso. Bialystock and Bloom! Those names should strike terror and hysteria in anyone familiar with Mel Brooks' classic cult comedy film. Now as a big Broadway musical, THE PRODUCERS once again sets the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humor. The 2001 Tony Award Winning Best Musical based on Brooks' 1968 film of the same name, has been wowing audiences around the world, and now at the Morgan Wixson Theater in Santa Monica through August 2, 2014.

To commemorate the 12th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Sarah Tuft's prestigious and storied play '110 Stories' was presented in Los Angeles on Sept. 11th at The Nate Holden Performing Arts Center. A love letter to New York City, 110 Stories shares the stories and perspectives of those who lived through the experience. The 2008-2009 Reprise Theatre Company season continues with 'I Love My Wife' with book and lyrics by Michael Stewart and music by Cy Coleman, December 2 to 14 at the Brentwood Theatre. Lea Thompson and Patrick Cassidy join Vicki Lewis and Jason Alexander. 'I Love My Wife' will be directed by Larry Moss with choreography by Lee Martino and music direction by Michael Skloff.

On Monday, November 19 television's tough-as-nails mob sister becomes Broadway's newest red-hot mama, when two-time Emmy Award nominee Aida Turturro ('The Sopranos') steps into the celebrated role of Matron 'Mama' Morton, the reigning cellblock diva of the hit musical Chicago. Joining Turturro is fellow 'Sopranos' co-star Vincent Pastore, who makes his Broadway stage debut as Roxie Hart's endearing but nearly invisible husband, Amos.
