For the first episode of Season 2, the show welcomes Disney Theatrical Group's President, Thomas Schumacher. Thomas has been the central figure behind Disney on Broadway's smash hit musicals such as The Lion King, Mary Poppins, Beauty & The Beast, Aladdin and more.

On this day in 1988, the musical adaptation of the horror tale, Carrie, began its notoriously short original Broadway run.

At Gypsy of the Year 2016, cast members from The Lion King performed a moving spoken-word piece giving voice to those marginalized by the current political climate performed by cast members Lamar Baylor, Kimberly Marable, Matthew Morgan, Brenda O'Brien and L. Steven Taylor. 

Scott Thorson, former lover of legendary entertainer Liberace, wrote a book in 1988 detailing their rollercoaster relationship and romance. The story was adapted to the small screen last month in HBO's "Behind the Candelabra." Below, Thorson talks about the biopic on this morning's TODAY show on NBC.

Today in 1988, Carrie opened at the Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre), where it ran for 5 performances. Carrie: The Musical is a musical with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and music by Michael Gore. Adapted from Stephen King's novel Carrie, it focuses on an awkward teenage girl with telekinetic powers whose lonely life is dominated by an oppressive religious fanatic mother. When she is humiliated by her classmates at the high school prom, she wreaks havoc on everyone and everything in her path.

MCC Theater is presenting the newly reworked and fully re-imagined production of Carrie, the musical, which features music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford (Academy Award winning composer and lyricist for the original film Fame) and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen (who also adapted the 1974 novel by Stephen King for the 1976 Brian DePalma film). Directed by Stafford Arima, performances for Carrie begin January 31, 2012, at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The production of Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Tim Rice's CHESS at the Signature Theatre opened August 10 and will run through September 26. Broadway's Jill Paice (Curtains, The 39 Steps), Euan Morton (Boy George in Taboo, Sondheim on Sondheim), and Jeremy Kushnier (Footloose, Rent) star in the rock musical Chess, which was directed by Signature's Artistic Director Eric Schaeffer. Written by Mamma Mia! composers Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson with Evita and Lion King lyricist Tim Rice, the 1984 cult musical of Cold War competition in love and chess is being given its first major Washington area production. Chess will be performed in the fabulous intimacy of the 276-seat MAX Theatre through September 26, 2010.
