Andrew Lloyd Webber began his career in musical theatre in the 1960s, partnering with lyricist Tim Rice. Their early works included The Likes of Us (1965), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1968; expanded into a full-length stage musical in 1972), Jesus Christ Superstar (1970), and Evita (1978). He also collaborated with Alan Ayckbourn on Jeeves (1975), later revised as By Jeeves (1996). During the late 1970s and 1980s, Lloyd Webber composed Variations (1978), the Requiem (1985), and Cricket (1986). Sir Tim Rice is an author and Academy Award, Golden Globe Award, Emmy Award, Tony Award, and Grammy Award-winning lyricist. Studied composition with Howard Ferguson and Richard Rodney Bennett at the Royal Academy of Music in the 1960s. He is best known as an orchestrator of musicals, particularly those of Andrew Lloyd Webber — Cats, Starlight Express, Song and Dance, Aspects of Love, Sunset Boulevard, By Jeeves, Whistle Down the Wind, The Beautiful Game, The Phantom of the Opera, The Woman in White, Love Never Dies and most recently The Wizard of Oz.
