Chase co-founded the underground comedy ensemble Channel One in 1967. He wrote for Mad magazine in 1970 and was a writer for the Smothers Brothers television comeback in 1975. In 1973, he became a writer and cast member of The National Lampoon Radio Hour and appeared in the off-Broadway revue Lemmings. He appeared in the film The Groove Tube (1974). Chase was an original cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1976, serving as the first anchor of the “Weekend Update” segment.
