Chase co-founded the underground comedy ensemble Channel One in 1967. He wrote for Mad magazine in 1970 and was a writer for the Smothers Brothers television comeback in 1975. In 1973, he became a writer and cast member of The National Lampoon Radio Hour and appeared in the off-Broadway revue Lemmings. He appeared in the film The Groove Tube (1974).
