The marquees of Broadway theatres in New York will be dimmed in his memory Friday, October 10th, at exactly 7:45pm for one minute. As BroadwayWorld reported yesterday, Tony Award-winning stage director and costume designer Geoffrey Holder passed away on Sunday, October 5th in Manhattan. According to family spokesman Charles M. Mirotznik, the cause of death was complications from pneumonia. Holder was 84 years old. An absurdist play by Samuel Beckett, it revolves around two characters, Vladimir and Estragon, who wait endlessly and in vain for someone named Godot to arrive. Godot's absence, as well as numerous other aspects of the play, have led to many different interpretations since the play's premiere. Since its US premiere in 1956, several notable revivals have been produced, including the 1988 production featuring Robin Williams and Steve Martin, and the 2009 revival starring Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin.

In a tiny house by the sea with nothing left outside - no sea, no sun, no clouds - live the mutually dependent protagonists Hamm, an aged blind master who cannot stand, and Clov, his servant who cannot sit. Their days playing out like the end of a chess match, they fight, flatter, thrust and parry, Clov always trying to withdraw from the game, while Hamm insists on finishing the matter once and for all.
