Frist Center Offers Free Admission on Mondays through December 2016 for Guests Bringing Donations

Beginning Monday, October 31, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts will offer free admission to guests bringing nonperishable food items for Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee on Mondays through December. The items most needed by Second Harvest this year are peanut butter, canned chicken or tuna, canned vegetables, canned fruit, pasta and cereal. Since 2012, visitors to the Frist Center have donated 20,989 pounds of food, which equates to 17,491 meals.

Thierry Fischer Leads Utah Symphony in Two Weekends of Concerts

Music Director Thierry Fischer returns to Abravanel Hall to continue the Utah Symphony's 2016-17 season with Tchaikovsky's famous first piano concerto, performed by award-winning guest artist Alexander Gavrylyuk, and Dvo?ak's 'New World Symphony' as part of the O.C. Tanner Company Masterworks Series. The orchestra also continues with symphony cycles devoted to Brahms and Ives, with performances of Ives' symphonies one and three over two weekends. ACTRESSES: AN ADAPTATION OF CHEKHOV'S 'THE SEAGULL' is the kind of production that captures one's attention. The poster is excellent, with an image that is as provocative as production company Black Hole Collective's description of their work. Anon Chekhov's 1895 drama was first produced the following year and became a landmark play in Konstantin Stanislavsky's 1898 staging for the Moscow Art Theatre.

The 2016 May Festival, which celebrates and concludes Music Director James Conlon's 37-year tenure, ends Friday and Saturday, May 27-28 with grand scale performances at Music Hall. These will be the final performances at Music Hall prior to its closing for renovation. On Friday, May 27 at 8 p.m., Mr. Conlon leads Dvo?ak's deeply personal cantata, Stabat Mater, a work was written during a time of deep grief for the composer following the death of his children. This rarely-performed work is full of symbolism, following a journey of mourning to hope of Paradise. At the invitation of James Levine, Mr. Conlon made his May Festival debut in 1978 conducting Stabat Mater (the following year he began his storied tenure as Music Director). Joining the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and May Festival Chorus will be soloists Julianna DiGiacomo (soprano), Elizabeth DeShong (mezzo-soprano), Anthony Dean Griffey (tenor) and Kristinn Sigmundsson (baritone).

Promethean Ensemble Theatre will enter its second decade with three plays that view characters and stories of the past through the eyes of modern playwrights. Leading off the season in December will be Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde, Moises Kaufman's 1997 biographical play about playwright Oscar Wilde's 1895 trials and ultimate conviction for the crime of homosexuality.
