Five Student Poets Announced in White House Committee's National Student Poets Program

The fifth annual class of the National Student Poets Program (NSPP) the nation's highest honor for youth poets has been announced by the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH) in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. The students were appointed by First Lady Michelle Obama at a ceremony earlier today in the State Dining Room at the White House. As part of an appointment ceremony, each of the students did a reading of an original poem.

As it embarks on its 10th Anniversary Season, Sideshow Theatre Company is pleased to announce the playwrights for "The Freshness Initiative," the company's commissioning and new play development program, now in its third year. The 2016/17 season will feature public readings of brand new plays by J. Nicole Brooks, Selina Fillinger and Isaac Gomez. The readings will take place at Victory Gardens Theater during May, June and July of 2017. Two of the world premiere productions featured in Sideshow's 2016/17 Season were developed through "The Freshness Initiative," Philip Dawkins' The Happiest Place on Earth and Calamity West's Give It All Back.

This August, Bloomberg Summer at the Roundhouse, the annual season dedicated to introducing new audiences to innovative culture, returns for its fifth consecutive year with Curtain Call by internationally renowned artist, architect and designer Ron Arad.  Ron Arad's 360° floor-to-ceiling installation is made up of 5,600 silicon rods suspended and filling the Roundhouse's iconic main space. Alongside the installation the Roundhouse has announced seven unique music events, designed by an eclectic mix of artists to take place as one-off performances in and around the installation.

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley closes its 2015/2016 season with the explosive new dramatic comedy, The Velocity of Autumn. This tender-hearted play by Eric Coble centers on an elderly artist locked in a volatile showdown with her family over where she'll spend her remaining years. In a wry, spirited quest to 'not go gently' into a retirement home, Alexandra barricades herself in her brownstone with enough homemade Molotov cocktails to blow the entire block sky-high as she negotiates the terms of her future with a long-estranged son who has battles of his own. The Velocity of Autumn was declared 'Wickedly funny and wonderfully touching' by Broadway World and 'A tale that could resonate with a broad range of audiences as it touches on a sobering dilemma faced by families every day' by Variety.
